SANTA MONICA 5000
Dear Viking Football Families,

The 3rd Annual Santa Monica 5000 is rapidly approaching and WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

Here's how it works:
The Santa Monica 5000 is a community-wide race/walk (5K or 10K) that is taking place on Sunday, October 6th. The excitement begins down by the beach and finishes up on the Santa Monica Pier with lots of celebration and activities.
The Santa Monica 5000 is a fun and easy way to raise money for our Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity Football Teams.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation is generously underwriting all of the costs of this event. What that means is that $5 of each registration fee and 100% of all the funds raised by our Football Program will go directly to our Samohi Football team's account with The Viking Fund.

Here are three options:
Option 1 - You can make a donation to our football program through the Santa Monica 5000 Samohi Football Fundraising Page. 100% of your donation goes directly to the Samohi Football Program. You can access our fundraising page at http://www.imathlete.com/donate/SamohiFootball
Option 2 - You can register for the race/walk and participate! $5 of your registration fees will go to Samohi Football
Option 3 - You can register to run/walk ($5 of registration fee goes to Samohi Football) and if you make a donation, 100% of your donation goes to our Samohi Football Program. You can access our fundraising page at http://www.imathlete.com/donate/SamohiFootball

Here is how to register for the Santa Monica 5000:
1.Go to www.santamonica5000.com
2.Click on the "REGISTER" Button
3.Choose your registration type
4.Complete the form and choose your team from the dropdown menu where it says "For Santa Monica-Malibu school members ONLY: Please designate Samohi Football"
5.Check out

We are asking for 100% commitment and involvement in the Santa Monica 5000 from our players and their families to help achieve the fundraising goals set. It is without question that we must be aggressive if we are to reach our goals, and with your help, we will be successful.

Your donation will help pay for:
* Uniforms
* Helmets & Shoulder Pads
* Transportation Expenses
* Footballs
* Training Equipment
* Video Camera/Tapes
* Video Editing Software
* Coaching Stipends
* Team Meals

Thank you in advance for your continued support and enthusiasm for the Vikings Football Program!

2013 COMMUNICATION & VOLUNTEER FORM

Attention Families

We are asking each family to make a donation of $250.00 to cover the very necessary costs that help keep the football program running efficiently. If each of our families donates this amount, there would be enough to cover the stipends for our coaches. If each could give up to $100.00 or more, there would be more funds to cover cost of equipment as found in the Wish List. However, please know that any amount of donation you provide is greatly appreciated.

You may also be interested in participating in the direct donation fundraising effort.

Checks can be made out to: Viking Fund (memo: football)

Thank you for all the support!

TRAVIS CLARK
Coach Clark was a gifted football player while attending Santa Monica High School, earning All-League and All-CIF honors. This success led to a football scholarship to Utah State University, where he led the conference in interceptions, two consecutive seasons, and was named 1st team All-Big West and 3rd team All-American at safety.

After earning his BA in Communications, Coach Clark went into production, excelling as a Steadcam operator. His credits include filmwork (Redline), documentaries (The Origin a/Dance), and music videos (Tupac Shakur's catalog). His love of football and competitive spirit could not keep him off the football field, and he returned as an Assistant to legendary Coach Norm Lacy to win two CIF Championships - one at St. Monica's in 1998 and the other here at Santa Monica High School in 2002.
ANDRE GAINES
Coach Gaines, a three-sport athlete at Hawthorne High School, excelled as an All-League fullback and continued his football career at Citrus College. After graduation, Gaines returned to Hawthorne to coach running backs and also decided to do some acting. He made his debut in "Not Another Teen Movie", appeared in "Gridiron Gang", and was cast in Nike, Gatorade and State Farm commercials. Coach Gaines is now a long shoreman in addition to coaching running backs at Samohi. You can also find him on the TV Show "The Game."
CHARLES GORDON
Coaching Position : Defensive Back
Coach Gordon graduated from Santa Monica High in 2002, he was a three year varsity player, and was elected captain two of those years. He was on the 2001-2002 CIF championship team.
After Graduation, Coach Gordon attended the University of Kansas; he has a BS in Business Administration. He was a three year starter at wide receiver and cornerback, led the nation in interceptions in 2005 and was named 3rd team All-American Team.
Three year all Big 12 wide receiver, cornerback & punt returner, elected captain in 2006 by the players, and 4 year Jayhawk Scholar Athlete.
Coach Gordon played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006-2008 as a cornerback, punt returner and kick returner, predominantly the nickel cornerback all three years.
Started in six games, 75 career tackles and two career interceptions.

Coaching History:
Santa Monica High School (2009-present)
SEAN PROCTOR
Coaching position: Special Teams
Coach Proctor played for Santa Monica High in the 90's. Currently he is employed with the City of Santa Monica in the Dept. of Social Services.

Coaching History: Santa Monica High School (2006-present)

Coach Proctor is honored to be able to come back and coach at his alma mater.
SEAN WESTON
Coaching Position: Secondary/WR

Coach Weston is a graduate of Serra High School where he was a high school All-American in football, which earned him an athletic scholarship to Texas A&M University.

While at Texas A&M, he was a four year starter and a college All-American at cornerback, breaking numerous school records. After Sean graduated with a BS in Agricultural Science, his football career continued in the NFL and CFL playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, Ottawa Renegade, and the B.C. Lions. Sean is currently an agricultural inspector for L.A. County, but his love for the game of football remains, which is why he has come to Santa Monica to teach the players (especially the defensive backs) his football knowledge.

SPONSORSHIP ANOUNCEMENT

Dear Supporters,

Santa Monica High School Football provides an outstanding athletic program for approximately 140 youth, from freshman to seniors, the largest athletic program at the high school. We not only build athletic skill and physical endurance, but also discipline, team work and character, during a crucial phase of development for youth. At this time, I would like to request your support for the most immediate needs of the program, which are safety equipment, training, food and audio and video services for games.

For all of our players, the football program builds self-confidence and a sense of community. For many of our teammates, a large number of which are at-risk youth, the football program keeps them motivated and connected to the school. Many young male students who struggle academically and face the threat of dropping out, the football program keeps them engaged, focused and striving to do their best. I am proud to mention that this year we have a young woman on our team, as this sport transcends what may be perceived as barriers.

As we begin our season, The Next Step 2013, I want to highlight our approach:

  • Our top priority continues to be academic success and full eligibility for all of our players.  We are monitoring every player’s academic progress, providing encouragement and offering intervention support where necessary.  It is our hope to continue our Wednesday evening study hall to provide an extra measure of assistance for any players who might be struggling.
  • The need for a healthy lifestyle, free of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence, is a key value promoted by our program.  In addition, with young adult obesity at epic proportions, the physical conditioning taught by the football program has helped many young men to build strength, reduce their health risk and change their lifestyles.
  • We teach physical and mental stamina, characteristics that will serve all of our players throughout their lifetimes.  With a rigorous practice schedule that runs from the early spring through the end of the football season, our players must show discipline and commitment to the sport and their fellow teammates.

We count on an enthusiastic and committed group of volunteers who help support our youth in the program, but we still need assistance to cover other much needed items. We have been working tirelessly throughout to build the strength, skill and spirit of the youth.  Our coaches have worked long and hard hours, almost entirely as volunteers, and we are very confident as enthusiastic about our players being a success at Santa Monica High School as true student athletes.

The SAMOHI Football Vikings team is a source of community and school pride. Please let us know if you will partner with us to provide us with support to our program. Contact us at samohifootball@yahoo.com for more information.

With deep appreciation,

Travis Clark, SAMOHI '86
